GOP Takes Another Image Hit Post-Election: Republicans Favor Tacking Right; Independents Offer Mixed Guidance

PRINCETON, NJ -- The Republican Party's image has gone from bad to worse over the past month, as only 34% of Americans in a Nov. 13-16 Gallup Poll say they have a favorable view of the party, down from 40% in mid-October. The 61% now holding an unfavorable view of the GOP is the highest Gallup has recorded for that party since the measure was established in 1992.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

The following statement is a given, but it bears repeating anyway.

Where to Go From Here?

The Republican Party heads into the New Year with its brand tattered by the election after decisive losses in the 2008 presidential and congressional races. Such a defeat inevitably leads to introspection in party circles about its message going forward.

No easy answer to this, is there caltha? I think overall the first thing the GOP and conservatives at large should do is go on the positive. Reinvent the general tone. Worry about infighting and ideological skirmishes later, but for now try to be a less negative force...

Ouch, this reminds me of that old Adam Sandler skit: "They're all gonna laugh at you!" except a lot more scary.

The GOP needs to lost the fanatical right-wing zealots and neo-cons and get back to the party they were 25 years ago: a party you may not have agreed with, but you respected.

E.D. Kain,

No.  No easy answer.

But, whatever direction the GOP leadership takes, we can only hope it isn't a tack farther right.   If we, as a nation, are in for nasty market weather (headwinds) then it's uncertain whether the GOP would gain any momentum from a starboard beam reach.

Take heart in the thought that the Democrats are also tacking, too. And, any direction to get us moving again will be welcome, as we as a nation are presently -"in irons".

I'm hoping the GOP fulfills President-elect Obama's request for bipartisanship - or rather a meeting of the minds at Center Right and Center Left.  We have to work out these solutions together.  I'm hoping the Obama administration can get both parties to pull the sheets in, and get us going again.

By constantly swinging further and further to the far right, with the final straw being the nomination of that crackpot Sarah Palin, the GOP has shot itself in the foot so many times that they no longer have any toes left. If they want to revive their party they need to finish kicking the neoconservatives and the religious right wing racists out of their party. Either that or split into two parties. One with the real republicans who believe in real fiscal conservatism (call them the Goldwater/Ford Party) and the other full off the lunatic religious fringe types (call them the Palin/Duke/Huckabee Party).

Splitting the party would be a fantastic idea. It would offer a viable option to moderate Democrats if the coming administration massively f***s things up like the Republicans did.

They should split.  I like the old Republican party (smaller gov, tax cuts, etc) to the new one (see Religious zealots).

I agree, if they split I would have to take a long serious look at a moderate fiscally conservative GOP as an option. As long as they stayed away from the so-called "family values" issues and left those to the religious Palin party. And imagine how odd (and nice) it would be to see real republicans again. It'd be just like a political Jurassic park! I thought they were extinct, but perhaps we could clone them

Wow, it will be intersting to see if they split, how historic that would be, never watched a party imploded before, should make for an interesting few years, but I have a good question, which side gets to keep the name republican?

Will the neo-religious crowd reuse the NO NOTHING party moniker, here are some other good names they could use, GODS party, The True GODS party, the I'm Not Them party, the NEO-American for life before birth party, I could go on and on but I would like to see what others come up with.

No, they shouldn't split. They should continue down this very path until they become extinct.

I'm agreeing with Mars, being a Dem, I need honorable opponents, I'd say either the Libertarians or another  Goldwater conservative party.  I might even join the Goldwaters.

What did Rachel call this last night during the show... ahhh yes  34%  just above freezing.  So true.

The Republican's sold their soul a long time ago to the religious right.  If they would stop listening to Limbaugh, Hannity, Ingram etc...American would be better off.
